The Toronto Marathon has been around for 34 years, has been the venue for some epic runs, and hosted some of the most elite athletes in the world. It’s not uncommon for 55 countries to be represented! The course winds it’s way from Mel Lastman square down Yonge, around Casa Loma, through the Rosedale valley, down the Bayview Extension, across King, down to Queens Quay, out Lakeshore to the Humber turnaround, back via Queen’s Quay, and up the hill to the Queen’s Park finish line. It’s a mostly downhill, beautiful course.
In this running of the Toronto Marathon, the weather either was amazing, or horrible depending on what a runner’s preference might be. There was lashing rain for the whole thing, and coming back from the Humber turn-around was the worst. Wind out of the north-east at 20 to 30km/hr and constant rain.
I met and had a great conversation with Douglas Wakiihuri, one of the best all time Kenyan marathoners. He was olympic silver medalist in Seoul in 88. He won the 1987 world championships, the London Marathon, Commonwealth Games Marathon, New York Marathon, etc etc. His personal best was 2:09:03!!! He is my age 48, and ran the half yesterday and came 2nd overall!! I consider Douglas Wakiihuri…running royalty, and a hero. We gave him a standing ovation at the Brunello pasta dinner the night before the race.
Another runner who blew us away…Katherine Switzer…the first woman to run the Boston Marathon! That was 1967 and she was infamously tackled by the race director Jock Semple and told she had no business being in the race because she is a woman! How times have changed, and how inspirational she is having single handedly blazed the trail for the millions of running women today. Great lady, and great speaker, and another standing ovation. She was a competitor in the first running of the Toronto Marathon and continues running and inspiring runners today.

On Saturday July 3rd, the Creemore Vertical challenge trail race was run. It’s 25 km of trails and country road, mud bogs, slimy hills that you have to climb with a rope, streams to cross and blistering heat! Total vertical climb is 875 metres or 2,870 feet elevation gain. (That’s a lot of times up and down the tiny escarpment equal to 3.8 times up the Blue Mountain ski hill)
Post Runners results:
Nick Brindisi – 34th out of 125 for the 25 km, time: 2:27:35
Tim Maguire – 61st out of 125 for the 25km, time:2:51:09

Canada Day was a sunny hot day, perfect for running from Duntroon to Stayner. Over 100 runners participated! Please send me your results and I’ll post them here.
Nick Brindisi – 11th place overall, time: 33:33
More to come…

I thought I would congratulate my soon to be 14 year old son on his ability to run right along with me. Thomas…Good job son!
Lately he has been coming along with me on 12 to 14 km runs, and doing it with speed, and ease. His latest goal is the Collingwood half. Looking forward to him joining us! I ran 14 km Saturday, 15 km Sunday, and 12 yesterday accompanied by Tom from our house on the ski hill to Sunset Point in the sweltering heat.
I love running here with the great variety of routes. I love running with our group. And I love bonding with my teenagers on long runs.

Reported by Claudia Johnston: Shannon and I went yesterday to race at the Victoria Duathlon in Waterloo. (http://www.trisportcanada.com/victorias.php) As you all know, it was boiling hot, now, I like that, but Shannon wasn’t so sure about this…I don’t blame her!
I have to tell all of you what an amazing race Shannon had, she biked at around 30km/h and finished the whole race under two hours!!! She is my hero, way to go Shannon! Plus, she did it all with a smile on her face!
The race was a 4km run, then 30km bike, and a 4km run.
CONGRATULATIONS Shannon!
